ABOUT THE ARTIST:

"I was born in Mexico City surrounded by great art —pyramids, stone carvings, murals and print. In addition to talented teachers who taught me how to draw, my father collected the works of artist Francisco DosAmantes, a member of the renowned Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP). I studied these prints intensely as I grew up, taking to printmaking like a duck to water when the opportunity finally presented. It was a workshop taught by Printmaker,  Dorothy Cochran, who connected me to best practices in Printmaking and a Charles Brand press. It’s been a fascinating evolvement in technique for me— the artwork builds up in layers, often starting with a woodcut monoprint, then the application of collage elements. Charcoal, India ink, stitching, gilding and encaustic often finish off the work, giving it a translucency, saturated color and added impact.

My decades of drawing, painting and printmaking come together in works that combine all three with other adventurous mediums. Presently, I use collage, encaustic, handmade paper and gilding to layer over a print—building pattern and color. Hexagons cut from the decorative interiors of envelopes have been a driving force. I layer tirelessly and final works with very different appearance and impact are the result. My newest work is pushing to become more & more abstract as I work with the hot encaustic, the color prompts liner up to be more immediate and emotional—a struggle between plan and impulse."

What identities of yours are important to you? How have they impacted your practice?

"Gender equity has been an important issue in my life, and I have supported many organizations that strive to create opportunities for women in the arts. In 1991 I joined the National Association for Women Artists, founded in 1889 with just this mission. I was honored 2005-2007 to lead this wonderful organization as its president. Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale is another important organization in my life. Time, and uninterrupted access to Printing Presses, through two residencies in 2003 & 2008 helped me build my body of work and centered me in my own aesthetic & practice."

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

"I call myself a “computational artist”. Wile not commonly used, this term is broad enough to cover the range of works that I make: computer animation, interactive digital Video and generative art. In my animated and interactive work, I create 3D spaces in virtual reality. I paste images onto the surfaces of the virtual world and provide a means for a viewer to navigate through the space and view the images. The resulting work provides an unusual context for viewing the images, while the images add ambience to the virtual space. Generative art can be roughly defined as follows: The artist writes a computer program. The running program generates an image. The code usually has switches and parameters that the programmer / artist can manipulate to obtain a variety of resulting images. Thus generative art comes in families of related work. For this reason, I arrange my generated images in groups that suggest relationships among the members of a family."
