Michaela Pohl - Mixed Media, Painting, and Drawing
I teach history at Vassar College and I draw. My work for the past ten years has its origin in German and Russian neo-expressionism and in the practice of cartooning. Lived trauma, memories of collective guilt and actual guilt feelings mix with flashes of recognition of the essence of the fascist family, which teeters between violence and a feeling of emptiness, especially under stress. The images for this Open Studio are of my adoptive mother and myself, produced between 2010 and 2020. They are works on paper ranging from 9x12 to 22x30, using ink, watercolor, guache, and markers.
