Emilie Houssart - Interdisciplinary
Painting, Sculpture, Performance
Emilie Houssart is a multidisciplinary artist based in upstate New York. Her work explores symptoms of human disconnection from the natural world, colliding the organic with the mechanical, delicacy with violence, and naturally interdependent chance systems with geometric constraints to question how we evaluate intelligence, and challenging our desire for control.
Emilie was raised in a Dutch family in Norwich, UK, and received her BA Hons. from the University of Durham. She studied and taught drawing and painting at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, graduating in 2006. After years in London and Austin, TX, she moved to the Hudson Valley in 2013. Recent shows include solo installations Damaged Goods at Norwich Millennium Library, UK and Forest Geometries at Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium, and the pop-up EARTHBOUND, NYC,
which she co-curated. Her work can be found in collections internationally.
Emilie teaches private classes at the Barrett Art Center, where she is Resident Artist in Thomas Barrett's historic studio, and is a freelance instructor of drawing, painting, intaglio and monotype. She has taught at the Charles H. Cecil Studios, Vassar College, West Point Military Academy and the British Institute of Florence, and is currently an Instructor at Fall Kill Print Works and the Woodstock School of Art.
