Born and raised in Queens, New York, I earned my undergraduate degree at SUNY New Paltz and later received my MA and PhD degrees from Case-Western Reserve University in a joint art history program with the Cleveland Museum of Art. Aside from being an art historian, I have always felt a strong need to express myself visually too.
My academic career has included positions at the University of Kentucky, Radford University, and the University of North Dakota. Living in New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Dakota before recently moving back to New York State, I am now in the process of "replanting" himself as an independent artist, scholar, and curator of the Hudson Valley.
Since moving to Poughkeepsie in 2018, my art has been shown in several regional group exhibitions (both juried and non-juried) as well as two previous Poughkeepsie Open Studio events.
My artwork often stems from instinctive impulses that I feel are essential for unadulterated creative expression. I produce three-dimensional and two-dimensional works in a variety of media, sometimes using materials not usually intended for making art (such as water putty, solder, tin foil, pebbles, food color, found objects, etc.).
I normally do not form concepts in advance of making a piece. Instead I allow initial ideas to flow, evolve, and grow while working. Oftentimes my art presents visual puns while making references to popular culture, the art world, or social and political issues.
