Nature and earth are my daily inspirations. I like catching a moment of life and freeze it in the dream world of the porcelain colors. I love to paint on porcelain for its suppleness, delicacy and strength. I love the challenge of adapting my fantasy and my inspirations to the shape of the porcelain and form at the end an harmonic unit. The smooth surface, the transparency of the porcelain has always been a fascinating feeling and a complement to the elegance of the finished work of art.

Ever since coming to the United States in 1999, I have been interested in exploring the properties of contemporary materials, such as plastic, paper acetate, vinyl, fabric and Mylar etc. I like when the organic qualities of the acrylics, gouache and ink mix and move spontaneously on a fixed structure, canvas, plastic or paper . Metaphorically, they are in search of freedom in a structured world. I play with light, transparencies and the sculptural qualities of these elements to evoke the concepts that are important in my work: Time, Change and Movement.  In my my ongoing series of 3D works, paintings and drawings, I have become intrigued by maps, especially as I researched extincted/exterminated ethnic groups. In the maps, I encountered symbols, colors, drawings, grids, dots and lines. Using these, I explore the psychological and cultural divisions that affect the different ways we see the world. The different qualities of the elements---the sometimes clash and contradictions of the materials---create a dialogue.

My work is highly inspired by nature, the passing of time, and the reclaiming of surfaces. For the last decade, books, salvaged paper, and found objects have been my work surfaces of choice. As an artist I look for a surface with stains and the telltale marks of a past life. I find inspiration from yellowed paper, peeling paint, or a water-damaged surface. I see these marks as a constant reminder that time stops for nothing.

Career and family has had me travel throughout the world. Wherever I am, I search out museums and galleries. My interest in photography started as a middle-aged adult in order to record what I saw underwater on dive trips including the Cayman Islands, St. Martin, Roatan, Utila, Bonaire, Mexico, Baja California, Cocos Islands, Fiji and Indonesia (Komodo, Raja Ampat, Triton Bay, Wakatobi). This interest has continued to expand. I now photograph my neighborhood in Poughkeepsie, Peach Hill (a 159-acre local public park) and other wonders that I find interesting.

I am a mother, I am a wife, I am a woman, and I am an artist. I identify with these roles daily, sometimes independently of each other but more often these conflicting responsibilities are intertwined. My current body of work focuses on my fascination with detritus consisting of lint, bugs, dirt, and hair that accumulate in the nooks and crannies of my home. Each image is a portrait of the trace evidence from a period of time, illustrating a balance between the artistic, feminine, professional, and domestic self.

Because working in clay has been a joy for me for much of my life, I strive to stay engaged in a life-long exploration with this beautiful and challenging material. When working at the pottery wheel, my intention is to produce well-crafted functional objects that are appealing to touch and hold. Though functional ware is glazed and food-safe, my wish is that all objects I create might provide moments of pleasure and pause in day-to-day life of the people who use them. Recently I have started working in porcelain and am excited about the new directions it is taking me.

Originally a photographer and filmmaker I discovered glass as a creative detour in life. My goal as an artist is to create objects that are unique, beautiful, engage the viewer and add a dimension of pleasure to every day life. I work with glass as a sculptural medium as well as a resource to create functional objects. I believe in spontaneous acts of creation…an intimate brief encounter with an object. I try not to treat glass objects as precious. Glass is irresistible but also fragile and it breaks. Like life, it is temporary.

My artwork often stems from instinctive impulses that I feel are essential for unadulterated creative expression. I produce three-dimensional and two-dimensional works in a variety of media, sometimes using materials not normally intended for making art (such as water putty, solder, pebbles, food color, found objects, etc.).

I generally do not carefully form concepts in advance of making a piece. Instead I allow spontaneous ideas to flow, evolve, and grow while working. Oftentimes my art presents visual puns while making references to popular culture, the art world, or social and political issues in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

My work has evolved as an expression of my meditation. As this practice may be a vehicle to supplant the ego with the spiritual, in my work I explore the notion of chance and energy to express this mysterious and essential phenomenon. This primordial and essential reality exceeds language and may only be spoken about as art.

My work is impulsive, abstract, process oriented and reactive to my processing of events, emotions and media. It’s a fusion of styles, derivative of many techniques and traditions: impasto, asemic writing, hatching, graffiti, action painting and abstract expressionism. Sometimes there are conceptual elements. I experiment widely working on many surfaces with different materials, in different sizes, and pursue meaning through mark making, scribing, counting and attempting to feel, document and record my experience without explicit narrative clues.

In my paintings the conveyance of an idea is the centerpiece of the picture making process. I believe that a painting should be clear in its aims. While the viewer will undoubtedly interpret an image through the prism of their own experiences, I hope to ensure that they are at least provided with a strong pictorial conduit through which personal feelings are channeled. If a painting is a conversation, then I want my conversation with the viewer to be purposeful and coherent.

I was born in Ghana Africa and moved to the United States in May 2006 at the age of 13, to pursue a better life and education. I come from a family of hard-working blue-collar. It came to them as a huge surprise when I decided to pursue a career in the arts. But to my surprise, I was met with more encouragement than disapproval to pursue my passion. With hard work and dedication, I won many awards. I won the scholastic American Vision Award in my senior year of high school, and the SUNY Best In Show award my sophomore year in college.

I am a graduate of Parsons School of Design in NYC where I received my BFA. I continued on to get my MFA in Sculpture from The Maryland Institute College of Art.

My work focuses on an internal language of ephemeral imagery. Abstract and in a state of becoming, my imagery is obfuscated and suggestive, never quite taking recognizable form, yet feeling like it is in fact something familiar. My work is small and intimate. I often feel as though I am slipping into the pool of my subconscious as I let lines and shapes appear and then fade or disappear under another piece of color or frenzied scribble. It is a building process. I’m looking for a relationship between the disparate parts that amplifies each voice, like visual music.

My paintings are collaged surrealist works in which figures and landscapes repeat themselves to merge the outer environment with inner desires. Across a scene, I aim to connect body, places, garments, and time with this subconscious dialogue. I work with found photos from movies and personal experiences to create these imagined narratives. The creative process involves piecing these images together in photoshop and transferring them to canvas through projection. Sometimes I will paint over an old painting and leave areas visible or cover the unwanted areas all together.

Intuition. Connection. Reflection. In my work I use an intuitive approach to capture a feeling, mood, aura, or moment. These moments are often fleeting points of connection between us that are sometimes significant and noticed, and other times brief and unacknowledged. I aim to capture these connections in order to strengthen the bond between all of us. Connections are at their strongest when we act with love and acceptance and by working to capture that in others I ultimately hope to find greater love and acceptance of myself. Reflecting on interactions and drawing inspiration from others I use watercolors, gouache, India ink, and acrylic paint in an associative way to offer acceptance and love from me to the viewer.

A day-job became a position as a founding partner at Smart Design, the successful product design consultancy known for its OXO Good Grip potato peelers—which you can find at Target and in the Design collection at MOMA. I resigned from Smart in 1998 to reboot my art career. In the last 15 years at the Navy Yard I developed many watercolor series. Most recent are interpretations of sculpture, architecture, reliquaries from the medieval objects found at the Metropolitan museum and its Cloister Collection. January this year I moved contents of my studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard to my “new” “old” house in Poughkeepsie on Hooker Ave where I live and have studio work space.

Barbara Todd is a locally born and raised photographic and digital artist whose work has been described as “painterly”, “romantic” or “dramatic” and sometimes noted for its unusual light. A self- taught photographer, Barbara’s work ranges from landscapes to abstractions and from photography to digital experimentation. “The art of looking is critical to my creative process. I try to break new ground rather than repeat myself artistically.” Barbara graduated from Marist College and is VP of Marketing at Artists’ Collective of Hyde Park. Previously she was Secretary for Art Along the Hudson and works in IT QA and Project Management.

I am a passionate realist, working with a palette of soft pastels, sanded paper, and a kneaded eraser. My early years of working in the abstract helped me refine my handling of the medium and sharpen my understanding of shape and form as it manifests in the natural world. I feel obligated as an artist to reflect the world I live in, to look keenly at my environment, and to present it to the viewer in an engaging way.
